The Wake County 2018 Transit Work Plan is available for public comment.
“Last November, voters approved a referendum to fund the robust ten-year Wake County Transit Plan, and we’re starting to see the first elements of the plan unfold,” said GoTriangle Board Chair Jennifer Robinson from Cary. “GoTriangle, along with the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO), Wake County, and all twelve municipalities in Wake County, are ready to hear from the public on the projects proposed for next year.”
The public is invited to make comments on the Draft Work Plan between February 20, 2017 and April 3, 2017.
The FY 2018 (July 2017-June 2018) Draft Work Plan outlines proposed improvements to the regional transit system that can be made beginning in 2017 without needing new buses. Proposed improvements include improving bus stops across Wake County, extending routes later into the night, and adding more hours in the midday and weekends in Raleigh and Cary and to destinations such as RDU Airport. Proposed funding is identified for continuation of the Fuquay-Varina – Raleigh Express, Knightdale – Raleigh Express, and Zebulon-Wendell – Raleigh Express routes, and for 9,000 additional trips through WakeTRACS for rural residents.
New revenues from the one-half cent sales tax approved last November can be used to study and help fund future major improvements such as Bus Rapid Transit corridors, ordering new buses, a new bus facility adjacent to Raleigh Union Station, and a Commuter Rail system connecting Garner and Durham with stops in Raleigh, Cary, Morrisville, and RTP. Funding can also be used to study land use and affordable housing along future transit corridors. Reserve accounts can be created to implement future transit investments.
The Wake County Transit Plan improvements will be implemented throughout a ten-year period.
