GoTriangle will continue to suspend bus fares for another year

Research Triangle Park, NC (July 6, 2022) – GoTriangle will continue to suspend bus fares for another year, through June 30, 2023. Our transit partners, GoCary, GoDurham and GoRaleigh, are also suspending fares for the same period. Chapel Hill Transit is free all the time.

The transit agencies suspended fares in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, seeking to ease financial burdens for the frontline workers and community members who were relying on transit to get to critical jobs or obtain food or health care.

The agencies and their governing boards have decided not to include fare revenue in the budgets prepared for fiscal year 2023, which starts July 1, 2022, and runs through June 30, 2023. The agencies will continue to follow all federal safety guidelines regarding cleaning, masks and social distancing.

Safety of passengers and employees is a high priority for GoTriangle and our partner transit agencies. We also prioritize connecting Triangle residents to all of the opportunities the Triangle offers. That is especially important in these challenging economic times of rising gas prices and inflation. We hope suspending fares adds to quality of life by encouraging more residents to try transit as a means of avoiding congestion and helping to address climate change.

“Our communities and riders across the region continue to transition as we emerge from this pandemic, and our transit agencies are happy not only to serve our public, but also be a source of encouragement,” said GoTriangle President and CEO Charles E. Lattuca. “Transit is a key component of a healthy and thriving community.”
