GoTriangle is poised to improve bus stop safety and accessibility in Wake County and lower its fleet’s carbon footprint thanks to U.S. Reps. Deborah Ross and David Price. The two secured funding for Triangle area community projects in the omnibus spending bill for fiscal year 2023, which President Joe Biden signed into law on Dec. 29.

“We are stepping into 2023 better prepared to serve some of our most vulnerable passengers and to protect our air quality,” said GoTriangle President and CEO Charles Lattuca. “We are grateful that Representatives Ross and Price have carefully chosen projects that will have a big impact on the lives of Triangle residents.”

Ross, who represents North Carolina’s 2nd District, obtained $900,000 to address critical transit access and operation safety concerns at GoTriangle bus stops across Wake County. The GoTriangle Wake County Transit Access and Safety Improvements project will make improvements at several locations where the design speed, traffic volumes, constrained right-of-way and number of transit passengers require safety and Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility improvements. These improvements include bus bays, sidewalk connections, ADA curb ramps, crosswalks and pedestrian signals. Proposed locations are distributed throughout the county, benefiting customers on several regional GoTriangle routes.

Ross said she is proud to have secured these funds and looks forward to seeing the positive difference they will make in our community.

“People across Wake County rely on public transportation every day to get to work, school, doctors’ appointments and more,” she said. “GoTriangle is committed to making much-needed improvements to bus stops in Wake County to ensure that everyone has access to safe, reliable public transportation.”

Price, who represented North Carolina’s 4th District before retiring at the end of 2022, acquired $8 million in bus replacement funding for GoTriangle, Chapel Hill Transit, GoDurham and GoRaleigh to expand the regional electric, zero-emission bus fleet. The Bus Replacement Funding for Urban Transit System project funding will provide $2 million to each transit agency. The goal is to further coordinate efforts to reduce traffic, cut emissions and improve air quality, particularly for historically disadvantaged communities.
